About the project

Cancer causes an estimated 533,000 deaths in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) annually. Breast cancer and cervical cancer are the most common in the SSA, making women the more disproportionately affected demographic. The biggest challenges to cancer care in this region are the lack of sufficient data, implementation, monitoring, challenges to comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and multi-level cancer care at all levels of the health system. The widely established benchmark indicators of adequate care are screening uptake, stage at presentation, time to diagnosis, and referral to treatment. Applied research aimed at substantially contributing to decreasing mortality must address key variables along the continuum of care such as, what is the pattern of cancer incidence, cancer stage, cancer survival and how does it change over time? How can the demand for cancer screening in rural and urban communities be increased? How can cancer care be successfully integrated in decentral primary care settings? How can hospital-based cancer registries help trace patient journeys and support standardized treatment referral within a resource constrained setting.

The overall goal of the Network for Oncology Research in Africa (NORA) is to contribute to reducing mortality of Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer in partner countries (Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia and Tanzania) that are part of the NORA consortium. NORA is set to carry out research which establishes evidence-based breast cancer, cervical cancer screening, and treatment pathways applicable in SSA. The research also seeks to generate policy recommendations for effective cancer control strategies. Ultimately, the goal of NORA is to contribute to a significant reduction in breast cancer and cervical cancer mortality in Africa.

In addition, NORA provides the following:

  1. A platform for academics and young scientists with comprehensive methodological and management competencies, enabling them to take on long-term applied research within the framework of national strategies.
  2. An advanced mentoring concept which gives scientists confidence to develop their individual research profiles.
  3. Intensive networking and participation in scientific events geared towards fostering a community of practice, aimed at shaping the African research agenda, and adapting it to population needs.

Requirements for selection

The project involves capacity building for scientists in the field of cancer research and is therefore offering opportunities for master’s students in target research themes along the cancer care continuum to develop their research, leadership skills and future independent research careers.

Master Students interested in applying are expected to have:

  1. A first degree in relevant health sciences
  2. Must be newly enrolled (Not more than one month) in a master’s degree program in Nigeria, within the field of epidemiology, public health, or implementation sciences for themes related to public health.
  3. Master’s degree course/research area is closely related with cancer research and willing to conduct research in the following areas as part of master’s dissertation/thesis.
  • RT 1:1 Cancer registration, screening and surveillance 
  • RT 3.3: Needs analysis and design of breast cancer primary clinic screening strategy; and the piloting, refining, and evaluation of selected implementation strategies at two primary health clinics in FCT
  • RT 3.4: Cervical cancer screening/triaging of patients to therapy
  • Research experience will be an added advantage.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Language requirement: Fluency in English and Hausa (written and spoken).
  2. Interest in cancer research and a commitment to a career path in cancer epidemiology and cancer-related research-training.
  3. Enrolled in a Masters training programme in a recognized training institution in Nigeria prior to application (Not more than six months into the second semester, having completed or being in the process of completing their coursework, but to finalize a topic for their thesis)
  4. Willingness to centre thesis around the NORA research areas of cancer registration, breast and cervical cancer
  5. Time and willingness to participate in team activities such as data collection, abstract writing, team meeting, scheduled PowerPoint presentations on progress updates and attendance of consortium meetings.
  6. Possess relevant skills/qualities such as punctuality, leadership, teamwork, communication and creativity.
  7. Based in the FCT

The Technical Consultant – MHPSS will be responsible for technical support and oversight of the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of MHPSS components of the IHVN Global Fund project for key and vulnerable populations and contribute to the development of project staff and project delivery.

Project Overview

The Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN), through funding from The Global Fund (GF), will be implementing the Grant Cycle 7 (GC7) grant, a combined TB &HIV effort pivotal to transforming TB & HIV programs. Under the leadership and coordination of the National AIDS and STDs Control Programme (NASCP), the National TB and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP), and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), this project will increase the identification of all forms of TB cases in the community and ensure prompt access to high-quality, patient-centered prevention and treatment through a Nationwide coverage of TB Public-Private Mix active TB case finding effort, and Community TB testing. The HIV component of the grant will focus on four states (Ebonyi, Anambra, Kwara, and Gombe) for end-to-end HIV comprehensive services, community PMTCT scale-up in all states,  PrEP in the four GF-supported states and in other states where PEPFAR IPs will be operating, and support harm reduction program (specifically needles and syringes) in 12 states. Other focus areas include Health Systems Strengthening/Resilient and Sustainable Systems for Health (RSSH) and National level support activities.

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the (SPO SI) will ensure data quality and best practices in data collection, data management, and data reporting at different levels. Promote health system strengthening activities.

Description and objectives:

Under the supervision of the Program Manager SI, the SPO will provide strategic leadership in the design, development, and implementation of the M&E framework within the state or region of implementation.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that data collection and reporting flow are strictly adhered to
  • Troubleshoot data flow choke points and resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Ensure proper management of PMM data
  • Distribution of Data Collection Tools to thematic areas
  • Liaise with different thematic units to resolve data quality issues and take necessary corrective actions

Position Overview

The Health Informatics Unit, within the Department of Strategic Information at the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN), leads the implementation of Health Information Systems designed to support public health interventions at both facility and community levels.

The Unit oversees a range of Health Information Systems, including the Nigeria Medical Record System (NMRS), Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), DHIS2, NMRS Community Mobile Systems, National Data Repository (NDR), NMRS Commodity Management Module, NMRS-to-LIMS exchange module, NOMIS, IHVN Central Data Repository (CDR), and additional emerging platforms.

The Unit’s mission is to deploy functional, sustainable, and locally relevant Health Information Systems that ensure the availability of high-quality data, enhancing patient care, and enabling robust monitoring and surveillance of public health programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Extend the functionality of the Nigeria Medical Record System by building custom modules in line with the needs of our very dynamic HIV AIDS, TB, PMTCT, and HTS program.
  • Extend the functionality of other Health Information systems like Central Database Repository, NMRS Mobile or  DHIS2 in line with changing user needs.
  • Test components Health Information System Components, NMRS modules, and applications (mobile and web) developed by other CDC partners before deployment.
  • API integration of different Health Information Systems for a secure data exchange. Example EMR to Central Database JSON exchange, EMR to SMS system exchange.
  • Ensure that standard software development processes and protocols are followed in all software projects (Clean Coding, Architecture, Documentation, Source Code management)
  • Routine reporting to the Program Manager Health Informatics on the status of Health Informatics Interventions at facility and community level (NMRS Module Deployment

Specific Deliverables:

  • Central Data Repository Upgrades: Develop, Upgrade, and Maintain Java Components of IHVN’s CDR (ETL, Consumer, MongoDB, Application Servers etc).
  • OpenMRS Development: Develop, Upgrade, and Maintain NMRS Modules Reporting Module, SMS Module, OpenMRS Synch Module.
  • HIS Component Development: Participate in the development of Health Information System components like PIMS, Facility Registry (FR), Health Worker Registry (HWR), Terminology Service (TS), Shared Health Record (SHR), and Deduplication Service as required by FG and other stakeholders.
  • Testing and Debugging: Testing, debugging, maintaining, and troubleshooting issues with HIS components developed in-house or by 3rd parties.
  • Software Engineering Best Practices: Adhere to Software Engineering best practices (Documentation, Testing, Development, Source Code Management, Deployment etc)
  • Routine Reporting: Ensure that superiors and other stakeholders are updated routinely on the progress of Health Informatics-related interventions at the facility or community level.

Education,  required skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or HND in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, or related fields.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and experience working with Java-based frameworks.
  • Experience in customizing and extending OpenMRS, DHIS2, OpenSRP2, or similar Health Information Systems.
  • Hands-on experience with ETL processes and transforming large datasets for analytical purposes.
  • Experience with MongoDB, PostgreSQL and MySQL for data storage and retrieval.
  • Knowledge of data integration methods, especially in healthcare environments.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and web services.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience with version control systems like Git.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in public health or healthcare informatics.
  • Familiarity with FHIR or other healthcare data standards.
  • Experience working with OpenMRS, DHIS2, OpenSRP2

Willingness to travel to the States within Nigeria.

Description and objectives:

The Program Officer OVC under the supervision of the Regional Manager and Program Manager, he/she will be responsible for facilitating direct field level implementation of OVC interventions, including identification and enrolment of OVC beneficiaries and their caregivers, identification of OVC eligible for preventive interventions, management of clinical schedules and mobilization and referral of beneficiaries for services. He/She will direct the support of OVC and households to achieve healthy, schooled, stable and safe goals. Education, psychosocial support, child protection, legal support, nutrition, economic security services within the case plan achievement benchmarks. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for supporting the program manager in the management and coordination of the OVC program in the state. 
  • Provide technical assistance and training as appropriate to CBOs to ensure that high standards of programming are provided. 
  • Carry out mentoring & supportive visits to CBOs at least monthly to ensure that CBO documentation, reporting to LGAs, NOMIS, DQA implementation is up to date. 
  • Ensure all mentoring visits to CBOs are duly documented in the CBOs visitor’s book and document gaps identified, actions to be taken to address these gaps and time frame for addressing gaps. 
  • Routinely carry out independent quarterly DQA to validate OVC data and ensure that they own their data.                                                        
  • Attend community gender meetings, parenting sessions and AGYW meetings to guide implementation.                                                          
  • Support CBOs establish adolescent and young person’s SG in block grant schools, kid’s clubs and adolescent clubs.                                                                            
  • Support CBOs establish functional Village Savings and Loan Association Groups for all caregivers and collate SG data using SAVIX.                                                                             
  • Assess, review, and recommend for approval of all block grant projects prior to implementation by the CBO.      
  • Participate in quarterly CBO/health facility case conference for unsuppressed CALHIV
  • Support CBOs identify government supported welfare packages in the state and facilitate linkage for OVC and their caregivers.                                                                      
  • Organize quarterly regional OVC review meetings to include state, LGA OVC desk officers              Support CBOs establish standardized kids and adolescent clubs using the learning from PSS training and empower older OVC to lead club meetings.                                                                    
  • Support CBOs to have functional Child Protection committees that are linked to the state child protection network.

  • Review and recommend for approval concept notes for HES prior to implementation by CBOs with caregivers.

  • Ensure that CBOs have and document routine monthly interaction with ALL volunteers

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess a BSc degree in public health, Nursing or Social sciences or related fields, preferably master’s in public health, Epidemiology or relevant field is an added advantage.

  • At least 2-5 years of direct involvement in community development work, technical support, management and administrative leadership in similar activities
  • Experience working with governments, LGAs and community structures is desirable
  •  Must have atleast 3years of experience with social development, health child protection, household, social protection, education, health and nutrition and HIV/AIDS care and support.
  • Experience in the prevention of HIV/AIDS with a focus on highly vulnerable children.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with local government, community and public health facilities, private sector entities, and local community structures

  • Experience with CDC/USAID funded PEPFAR OVC and or HIV/AIDS programs is an added advantage.
